What Ever Happened to Elections?
I don’t get it. I just ran down to the store and picked up a few things. At the checkout, I swiped my rewards card and instantly the card reader told me how much I’ve spent and “saved” so far this year. It printed out coupons based on the kind of stuff I buy and offered to text me next time my brand of toilet paper goes on sale.
Next I swiped my debit card. Within moments, my identity was verified. The bank told the store I had enough money to make the purchase and off I went. Once home, I got online and checked my bank balance. Amazing. The purchase I had just made was already recorded by the bank.
OK. Big deal, it’s 2009 and technology has come a long way.
Then I checked the news and found out that Minnesota is still trying to figure out who won the Senate seat.
Why can’t Americans count votes? Come on. There’s nothing to it. Everyone eligible gets to vote once. Count the votes and bam. Election over.
But no, our government has taken this extremely simple process and turned it into a complete mess. Government is very good at messing up anything simple that works. Early voting, absentee voting, proxy voting…..
Oh yea. I want these guys to take over our banks and health care.
Election Day is such a simple concept. Show up, prove you’re you, vote, count the votes. It’s not that hard! How can they screw that up? OK, absentee voting should be available for extenuating circumstances (military duty, bedridden, out of town, etc.). But that’s it. It aint rocket science.
Democracy begins with a fair and open election. No gimmicks, no sideshows and no tricks. When one side or the other is given the opportunity to compromise our election process, everyone loses.
