The Bright Side of a Bad Economy

Posted by: Larry

If this sounds a bit smug, well… too bad. But for me, things couldn’t be better at work right now. Oh times are tough and profits are down. A raise is probably not in the immediate future and my job could disappear tomorrow. But for now, things are great and I owe it all to the current economic condition.

With people not buying as much, the guy that owns our shop was able to downsize the staff. Thankfully, we’re not a union shop so seniority didn’t come into play. Nope. The owner was able to downsize by simply getting rid of the folks that failed to contribute to the company’s success. He decided that this ain’t the place to come to for a free ride.

What that left was a small group of people willing to give whatever it takes to keep the company profitable and alive. The company understands our value to it.. and we understand its value to us.

It’s amazing how great a job can be when everyone is working towards the same goal. Where everyone wears several hats and nobody is afraid to get their hands dirty. Where the concept of teamwork is real and each player’s contribution is appreciated and depended upon.

Nobody whines about what they have to do.. they just do it. Egos, arguments and the like are gone. There’s no bureaucracies or office politicking.. just a group of people with a strong work ethic busy at keeping their source of income healthy. It’s great.

There’s been some scary moments. Days that it looks like things have finally dried up and that the end is near. But those times just seem to motivate the guys around here to work a little bit harder.

I was thinking today what if the boss did have to close up shop? I would bet that not one of us would be out of a job long enough to draw the first unemployment check. Not with the work ethic inside these guys.
